WEEK 2: ISLAM AND SUTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Bismillahirrahmanirrahim and Assalamualaikum everyone!
For today topic, we will discuss about the connection of Islam and Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainability in Islam refers to "consumer welfare, economic efficiency, social fairness, and ecological balance in the framework of an evolutionary knowledge-based, socially interactive paradigm that defines the Shuratic process."
In attaining the sustainable development objectives, human must preserve and maintain their relation with these 3 pillars :
Relationship with Allah
Relationship with human being
Relationship with the environment
Islam and environmental sustainability
The right to benefit from nature is inextricably tied to accountability and the preservation or protection of the resources. The legal principle established by the Prophet Muhammad is that ' the benefit of a thing is in return for the liability attached to it' .Human ignorance of God's commandments is a major contributor to environmental destruction. People should realize that protecting the environment is a religious obligation that God has commanded to us. Those misuse the utilization will be punished whether in the world or hereafter.
Islam and social sustainability
Equality, justice, fairness, brotherhood, kindness, compassion, solidarity, and freedom of choice are all examples of collective morality in the Qur'an. The social sustainability should be able to secure happiness and prosperity for both individual and society.
Islam and economic sustainability
Islam promotes development and both socially and economically. For the development of socio economic condition, Islam has provided endowment system(Waqf) and distribution of zakat in as an effective means to prevent poverty. It shows that Islam really emphasize the sharing and caring behavior in wealth distribution.
Therefore, it indicates that how important of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is in human life. We have to sustain, maintain and preserve the well being of the people, environment, nature, and all living things in this world. Human should wisely governs the world so that the success attained will be balanced in this world and hereafter.
That's all for today! Thank you!

Thank you leya for sharing this, I think Islam as a religion has a strong relationship with the sustainable development. It is because Islam encourage its followers doing good things and avoiding bad things. Sustainable development is a good things and of course Islam encourage its followers to apply this in their life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of your statement. i just realized Islam not only teach us to be a good person or look after our self-purity. But, it also teach us to cooperate to achieve "sustainable development". To be spesific through zakat and waqf
ReplyDeleteYes I'm agreed. Whatever activity we perform in this world must be guided with Islamic law or teaching. Its a requirement and without Islam, the conduct might harm and damage the meanings of Sustainable Development itself.
