WEEK 6: STUDENT AND INSTITUTION CONTRIBUTION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AGENDA

 Assalamualaikum and Hi everyone!

For this week, the lesson is about the role of the students in contributing the Sustainable Development Goals. This topic is actually very important for the coherent realization among the students so that productive thinking can be developed for SDGs contribution. All the students being asked to point out their opinion and role and here is mine.

SDG: Gender Equality

Probably campaign, for the equal right of every student to grab the opportunities in university. This can be done by encouraging all students regardless of gender to have effective participation and chance for leadership, decision making .vocalizing thought or opinion and having equal says in speaking.

Example: We can view in the perception of the society about the course or field that only deserve be taken by female or male. Such as engineering course. Nowadays people keep saying that the course should be dominated only by male students and female cannot compete. And ended up the female students who taking the course being undervalued of their abilities to success.

Therefore, this campaign will increase awareness which the opportunities should be given according to student's interest, passionate, determination and skills, not by gender. Give them space especially women to bring in their own ideas, talent and solution for the benefit of everyone and the future. Don't limit the understanding of gender roles because of stereotypical characteristic.

From Islamic perspective, in achieving gender equality goals, the meanings should not beyond of what Islam has taught about. For instance, Islam forbid the equality for transgender or homosexual group. There is no excuse on the prohibition and we must follow regardless of the situation.

SDG: Good Health & Well being

Nowadays students are packed with a lot of assessments and so much work to be done. Almost all of the students will get stressed for their upcoming exams and deadlines which are many in each term. To add, students are striving to achieve higher grades in each subject without thinking about their health. For example: they don’t have time to eat because they prioritize study over anything, they don’t socialize with friends and are pressured, sitting for a long time, lacking sleep, and overstressing, which can lead to depression, anxiety because they want to be the best at what they're doing.

Maybe the institution like university can hold a campaign of awareness about the importance of health and help students in managing their study planning so that it will be balanced with their well being and studies. And also student representatives / society club can make a program which is compulsory for all students to participate in maybe interesting games or sports so that all of the students will socialize together.

Islamic perspective

Nevertheless, in pursuing all the SDGs objective, we must implicit the practice and teaching of Islam in order for human to be guided to the correct decision and solution. It can be our protection from any thing that can harm ourself and others.

  1. A very good insight leya, a chance or opportunities in education, societies activities should not be discriminated by certain types of group. Everyone should have the same opportunities regardless the gender and so on. There should not have privilege of opportunities when it comes to the education, societies activities and so on.

  2. For me, gender equality refers to promoting fairness in education. When we achieve gender equality, all students will be free to pursue their education without fear of discrimination or harassment because of their gender. Moreover, it’s really important to choose a course which we have interest. One thing is very clear without persistence and perseverance nothing can be achieved in any career. Passion has to follow dedication and continues sharpening of the skill set, mind set and your zest to grow and achieve in any career. Passion and interest combined with dedication is the only key to success. So it’s very important to choose a course in which you have interest in that case you will enjoy your studies. With less effort you will get more marks since you are enjoying the subjects.

Yess, indeed. Even a family also should not discriminate among children in terms of where to pursue their studies. It can be seen that some family restrict their daughter to studies overseas because of understating the ability of the daughter to bring herself. The family institution is regarded as the one that builds the characters among people who become a leader in the future. Therefore, they are the first that should support the passion of each son and daughter.

Yes, I agree with you. Today, if we are aware in fact most of the courses also can be taken by female students because they have the right to take and study something in that field if that is their interest. We should have given support and encouragement to them instead of judging them.
